Architecture Wednesday: The Essence of Soho

Now, of course, technically, this is not 'architecture' though it is 'interior architecture' as this penthouse loft space has been re-imagined into one of the most stunning, view worthy apartments ever!

Located in the Soho neighborhood of New York City, you rise to the top floor in a private elevator and step into a gracious wood-paneled entry that leads into a 2600 square foot living room featuring original cast-iron columns and ceilings that soar from 16 feet up to 22 feet under the light-infusing skylights.

Massive windows facing south and west add even more light and create the perfect picture frame of the new Freedom Tower. A cavernous wood-burning fireplace is finished with polished Eramosa marble and a honed Cohare marble hearth. Adjoining the glamorous dining area is a 1,500-bottle glass-encased, climate controlled wine cellar including a Sub Zero fridge for wine and champagne.

Off to one side is a media room is unlike any other, with plush, upholstered stadium seating, dramatic cove lighting and ultra-suede lined ceilings and walls to make viewing the large projection screen all the more pleasurable. This Cinema experience with its Dolby 10.1 Surround sound is just a small part of the extensive, fully integrated Savant A/V systems throughout the apartment.

The Bulthaup kitchen in grey aluminum with Carrara marble counters and custom built sink is equipped with Gaggenau, Sub Zero and Miele appliances including built-in coffee maker, instant-hot and filtered water and a large pantry. A dumbwaiter services the rooftop kitchen and entertaining space and there is direct staff access through the laundry room that houses anoversized washer and dryer with a large sink and Corian counter top.

A 30 foot tall glass-peaked bulkhead houses the illuminated stairwell that leads up to the mezzanine floor housing an office and bedroom suite. Another flight of stairs ends at the rooftop terrace, a landscaped 4,200 square foot space with gracious covered seating and dining areas and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen. The floor surfaces are covered in Ipé wood decking, pavers and simulated lawn while the walls are clad with Balinese stone, Ipé wood and copper.

And best of all, from the terrace you have 360º views of both the Empire State Building and the Freedom Tower simultaneously; and you can see them from under a Boffi outdoor shower.

The sumptuous Master Suite is outfitted with silk carpets and a lavish white oak custom-milled walk-in closet and vault. An en suite bathroom features a soaring octagonal skylight that hovers over book-matched Gaudi slab marble floors, a freestanding Oceanus soaking tub and a white Onyx lined double shower ‘room’ with rain-head shower.

The three additional bedroom suites are equally impressive and complemented by an exercise room, a housekeeper/massage room and a spa bathroom accommodating a 6-person steam room with Kohler Aroma-therapy and Chroma-therapy via a 100-head fibre-optic lighting system integrated into the mosaic tiled barrel ceiling.

Houseboy massage room! Double score!

The apartment features white oak hardwood floors throughout and many walls are finished in a creamy-white venetian plaster. The sophisticated HVAC systems, motorized shades, intercom, Lutron lighting, Honeywell Security and A/V systems are integrated into the Savant system and controlled via iPad’s mounted to discrete magnetic wall docks.

It has 4 Beds and 5 Baths and covers an area of 7,500 square feet and can be yours for $32,000,000.
