Michelle Bachmann Causes Folks To Donate To Her Opponent

I'm a sucker for a story with a happy ending, and this one certainly fills the bill. Plus, it has the added joy of being a smackdown to compulsive liar, bigot, homophobe and all-around crazy, Michelle Bachmann.

Here's what happened.

In Chicago, during a worship service on the eve of Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, Rabbi Michael Siegel of Anshe Emet Synagogue offered what he called a customary greeting to a public official in the audience--the official being the afore-mentioned Minnesotan, Bachmann--and Siegel says the greeting is simply a synagogue policy to acknowledge the office, not the individual or her politics.

But some in the synagogue weren't feeling the love for Bachmann. A few congregants, enraged by the appearance of Bachmann, walked out, and one man, Gary Sircus, ran out and instantly stared a campaign of his own, in support of Bachmann's opponent in the race for her congressional seat, Jim Graves, saying:
"The holiness of the room and the holiness of the evening was greatly diminished for me, if not completely destroyed. Our congregation values and embodies tolerance, compassion, respect for individual rights, intelligence, science--all of the things that I think Michele Bachmann stands against."
Bachmann makes no bones about her homophobia, and her belief that gay folks are "of the Devil" and can be fixed, by the likes of her ALLEGEDLY gay husband, Marcus, so, after leaving, Sircus composed an email to Graves' campaign and sent it to other members of the synagogue, urging them to donate:
"I felt that the best way to 'honor' Ms. Bachmann's visit was to make a contribution to your campaign. Even though I do not vote in Minnesota, please do everything in your power to take away this evil woman's soapbox."
Rabbi Siegel apologized to his congregation:
"I am aware of the fact that our congregation's policy in regards to public officials clearly caused pain to some members of our community on the most precious day of reconciliation on the Jewish calendar. That we regret deeply."
But, as I said, the story has a happy ending because the Graves campaign, after Gary Sircus' email went viral, saw an increase of, ahem, 400% in donations. Maybe with this influx of money he can finally overcome the already shaky campaign of Bigot Bachmann--Bachmann's lead over Jim Graves is now within the margin of error--and send her home to Minnesota so she can back cookies for Marcus and do his hair and stuff.

  4. Bachmann is one of those people that confuse me. There is no disagreement about who and what she is. She doesn't even pretend to have any of the the compassion required of a decent human being. And yet to a segment of voters she is popular. Hopefully a very small segment in Nov. Of course then she'll just hit the road and rake in the $$ like Palin.

I too hope she suffers a stunning political defeat.

She's been an embarrassment to the people of Minnesota!

I recall meeting a few people from Minnesota at the last NetRoots Nation. They too really want her gone.

  9. I feel reassured by the fact that she's starting to get taken down. I like that fact. I view this as when Rick Santorum lost his seat in Pennsylvania.
